btw the credit should go to the original author for writing this

The famous quo-sound is based on the power chord. The powerchord is a triad without a
third. So it's actually an interval. The interval (called perfect fifth) is formed by
two notes which are seven half steps (or five scale steps) apart. The distance from C
up to G is a perfect fifth, as shown below. The chordname may be abbreviated to C5.

EXAMPLE 1:
e|----|
B|----|
G|----|
D|----|
A|-10-|
E|-8--|

Place your first finger on the E-string and your third finger on the A-string. This
is a moveable pattern. Position the chord on the fifth position and you have an A5.
Rock players often use just these powers chords, instead of full chords, to achieve
a basic rock and roll or heavy metal sound. For the typical boogie-sound there's more
to do. Place you fingers in position as shown in example 1. Keep your first and third
finger as they are and place your pinky on the 12th position of the A-string. You're
making a new interval called major sixth. Now you have to alternate as follows.

EXAMPLE 2:

e|-------------|
B|-------------|
G|-------------|
D|-------------|
A|-10-12-10-12-|
E|-8--8--8--8--|

It's quite a left-hand stretch up to this major sixth (be careful, don't hurt yourself).

Progression I
The full eight-bar progression is played like this:

C F
E|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
B|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
G|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
D|------------------------|------------------------|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|
A|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|
E|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|------------------------|

C G
E|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
B|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
G|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
D|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|------------------------|12-12-14-14-12-12-14-14-|
A|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-|
E|------------------------|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|------------------------|

C
E|------------------------|------------------------|
B|------------------------|------------------------|
G|------------------------|------------------------|
D|------------------------|------------------------|
A|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|
E|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|

Sound is important
Quo-songs are often based on the boogie-woogie shuffle (tripletfeel). This song however,
is based on a straight-four rock feel (straight eights). You have to play the first note
staccato (short) and the second one legato (keep it ringing as long as possible) to get
that typical Rick Parfitt rythm-sound. See next example. Dots (.) mean staccato,
underscore (__) is legato. You also have to emphasize the notes with the dots.

e|------------------------|
B|------------------------|
G|------------------------|
D|------------------------|
A|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|
E|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|
. __ . __ . __ . __
If you find difficulty in doing this, you first can try it without the pinky. Practice
slow at first and gradually speed up your tempo.

Progression II
Further on the F-chord, in the fourth bar of the progression, is replaced by a F#dim7.
Play the full progression now like this:

C F
E|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
B|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
G|------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
D|------------------------|------------------------|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|
A|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|
E|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|------------------------|

F#dim7 G
E|-------------------------------|------------------------|------------------------|
B|10--10--10--10--10--10--10--10-|------------------------|------------------------|
G|8---8---8---8---8---8---8---8--|------------------------|------------------------|
D|10--10--10--10--10--10--10--10-|------------------------|12-12-14-14-12-12-14-14-|
A|9---9---9---9---9---9---9---9--|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10-|
E|-------------------------------|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|------------------------|

C
E|------------------------|------------------------|
B|------------------------|------------------------|
G|------------------------|------------------------|
D|------------------------|------------------------|
A|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|10-10-12-12-10-10-12-12-|
E|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--|
The last thing I want to say about the rythm is that you have to keep time. Hit the
strings exactly on the time-spot.
