I tabbed this from "A Live One" so if you have that version, good for you, but if you
don't, then I don't know how close the original is to this one. But this is pretty
accurate I think.
During the verses, these are the 2 chords used:
e------------------|
B-----8-------6----|
G-----7-------5----|
D-----x-------x----|
A-----7-------5----|
E------------------|
To go into the "ohh's," play:
e---------------------------------|
B-----15///-(slide down a lot)----|
G---------------------------------|
D---------------------------------|
A---------------------------------|
E---------------------------------|
Then play this twice . . .
e--------------------------------------------------------------------|
B--------------------------------------------------------------------|
G-9-9/14~-13-14~~-9/7-7-7/14~-13-14~~-10/9-9-9/14~-13-14~~-9/7-7~~~--|
D--------------------------------------------------------------------|
A--------------------------------------------------------------------|
E--------------------------------------------------------------------|
. . . and end the 2nd one with:
e------------------------------------------------|
B---10-----10------------------------------------|
G----------------8-9-8-7-------8-9-8-7-----------|
D-7------7---------------10-7----------10-6--/7--|
A------------------------------------------------|
E------------------------------------------------|
. . . and then directly following that play:
e---------------------------------10----10-----------------------------------------|
B-------------------------------------------8-9-8-7------8-9-8-7-------------------|
G-----------------------4---5--/7-----7-------------10-7---------10-6--/7----------|
D-------3---5---6------------------------------------------------------------------|
A-3p2h3---x---x---3/2/3---x--------------------------------------------------------|
E----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
. . . and then the rest of the song is basically just variations of that, long and impossible to tab.

As recorded/performed by Phish on the album “A Picture of Nectar”
I’ve seen a lot of TABs for this tune and frankly, I’ve never been pleased
with any of them. I’m not saying mine is any better but it makes a bit more
sense to me and it is how I play it. It sounds good to my ear so I figure
I’ll pass it on to you and see what you think. If you like it, great!! If
not, play it how it feels good to you. This is my interpretation and is not
intended to be a note-for-note recreation of what Trey plays (although I
think most of it is pretty close! =D )

Verse:
I think they pretty much play Em7b5-Dm7 but the V (A7b9) is heavily implied.
I play it as a ii-V-i mostly but you can play it as ii-i and be fine (and
maybe closer to what they actually play. Anyhow, here are the voicings I
usually use. They are pretty basic. If you are using a pick be sure to mute
the G string.

Then the “Oh-ooooh-oh-ohhh-oh-ohhh” part: (play twice)
Then the “controlled chaos” part. (wicked fun to play when you nail it!!)
This is a really hard part to TAB the actual phrasing and articulation that
Trey uses. There are slides, anticipations, and all kinds of things that are
just “Trey.” You really have to listen to a few versions of the song and try
to hear what he’s doing with it. It’s a really cool line!! (and my TAB
might be a bit off but I think more accurate than some that I’ve seen.) The
song switches time signatures a bit here as well. You could cound it as one
big 10/4 but I find dividing it as 2 bars of 4/4 followed by one bar of 2/4 works best.
(for me)
Note once again the new fingering. I use this to get back down the neck.
It requires a few position shifts. Point being that you can play this melody
several different ways and it’s still going to sound just fine.

Then back to the verse. (Em7b5-Dm7)
The jam is based on this chord progression: Dm7-Bb7-Em7b5-A7b9
This progression comes in at “Maybe so, maybe not”
You can pretty much solo in D minor the whole time with the exception of the
A7b9 chord which has C#. Use D Harmonic minor for this chord. (D-E-F-G-A
Bb-C#)
So, that should get you playing Stash! I may have left out some articulation
but sometimes you have to put a little ear into it. Once you know the parts
and figure out the pattern it’s really not that hard to play. The hardest
part is being able to jam over that progression the way they do. Seriously!
They jam this tune HARD!!
Anyhow, send any comments, corrections, complaints, etc. to Gabe at

Good luck!!
